Recently, an in-depth research on phosphate in order to provide novel therapeutic strategies for hyperphosphatemia by Dr.Nguyen Thi Tuyet was published in the American Journal of Physiology – Heart and Circulatory Physiology.

With the aims of identifying strategies against vascular calcification in hyperphosphatemic patients, Dr.Tuyet focuses her research on the role of oxidative stress induced by Ca2+ overload in vascular smooth muscle cells in vascular calcification. The novel findings of this study are high phosphate entrance via type III sodium-phosphate cotransporters PiT-1 and -2-depolarized voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in vascular smooth muscle cells leading to cytosolic Ca2+ increase and subsequent oxidative stress are indispensable for osteogenic differentiation and calcification. In addition, the positive feedback is established where PíT-1/-2 abundance in plasma membrane via Ca2+ overload and oxidative stress. Results of the research shows that identification of mechanism in phosphate toxicity in vascular smooth muscle cells provide novel strategic therapy in treating and preventing vascular calcification.

Prior to joining VinUni as Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, Dr.Tuyet had participated in teaching medical students and working at hospitals in the role of faculty cum head of training department of School of Medicine. Dr.Tuyet undertook 7-years research training and postdoctoral research in Physiology at Yonsei University – a prestigious university in South Korea.
