Career Pathway
Career Pathway
Our residents can pursue various career pathways after completion of this program.
Completing an ACGME-I accredited residency program offers a structured and comprehensive training pathway that prepares residents for a variety of career opportunities within pediatrics, as summarized below.
1. General and/or Hospital Pediatrics Practice
Upon completion of the residency, many pediatricians enter general pediatrics practice, providing care to children in outpatient clinics and/or inpatient hospital settings. The foundational training in a broad spectrum of pediatric conditions equips our pediatric residents with the expertise to diagnose, treat, and manage a range of health issues affecting children, from infancy through adolescence.
2. Subspecialty Fellowship Training
For residents with a particular interest in a focused area of pediatrics, pursuing fellowship training in a pediatric subspecialty is a common next step. The ACGME-I accreditation also offers opportunities to apply for pediatric subspecialties/fellowships abroad. Fellowships typically last 3-4 years, depending on the subspecialty, and provide advanced clinical training and even research opportunities in the pediatric subfield.
3. Academic Medicine and Research
For those with an interest in academia and research, pediatric residency training also opens doors to academic medicine. Pediatricians who complete residency programs could also opt to work as faculty members at medical schools or research institutions, and they may also pursue a PhD program after the residency. These individuals engage in both teaching medical students and residents, as well as conducting clinical or laboratory-based research in pediatric medicine. Academic pediatricians also play an essential role in training the next generation of pediatricians, ensuring the continued evolution of pediatric care standards and education.
4. Leadership Roles and Advocacy
ACGME-I pediatric residency programs could be also propaedeutic for leadership positions in healthcare administration and advocacy in national/international public/private organizations. Pediatricians with a passion for policy and healthcare improvement may pursue roles within hospitals, healthcare systems, or public health organizations.
