Inpatient Rotations

VinUni’s internal medicine residents will participate in diverse inpatient rotations across four main teaching hospitals: Vinmec Time City Hospital, 108 Military Central Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital, and the Hanoi Heart Hospital. Working alongside master clinicians and specialty experts, residents engage in patient care, ensuring a comprehensive clinical practice experience. The multidisciplinary inpatient care teams, comprising faculty, senior residents, junior residents/interns, medical students, pharmacists, nurses and others, provide a structured environment where residents do patient care under supervision of the faculty, as well as teach junior residents and medical students and discuss management plan with nurses and clincial pharmacist. Core rotations are repeated with increasing levels of supervision and expectations for performance. Faculty conduct direct observation and frequently provide constructive feedback to support residents in achieving proficiency. Weekly teaching conferences, including didactic sessions, case presentations/discussions, morbidity and mortality reviews, radiology rounds, journal club, high value care offer residents not only medical knowledge but also opportunities to share their own experiences and apply evidence-based medicine with faculty, experts, and peers.

Ambulatory Training Rotations

VinUni’s internal medicine residency program is pioneering outpatient medicine training as a core, repeated rotation in 4 years, where residents have their own patient panel. The general medicine experience involves care for a unique patient panel and urgent care for the other care team provider’s patientsThis rotation aims to provide residents with continuity of practice experience, involving tasks such as preventive care, chronic disease management, first aid, transitional care following hospital discharge, and the maintenance of patient-physician relationships. The outpatient medicine rotation occurs in one-week blocks every 10-12 weeks, aligning with the health check routine of Vietnamese people and facilitating appropriate educational activities. Training sites include the Vinhome Ocean Park Clinic and several specialty clinics in Vinmec Times City Hospital. Residents have the opportunity to fully integrate into the outpatient care system under the graded supervision of preceptors, who serve as consultants for resident doctors’ patient care decisions. In addition to clinical practice, faculty and residents collaborate to organize weekly conferences based on actual cases, covering aspects such as laboratory and imaging interpretation, outpatient medication management, preventive and screening strategies, and the latest medical literature.

External Rotation

During their external rotation, medical residents at VinUni embark on a two-week journey beyond the confines of our institution and its teaching hospitals, venturing into other residency programs to delve into diverse clinical teaching environments. This unique opportunity allows residents to forge new connections with peers and faculty in external institutions, fostering a collaborative network that transcends geographical boundaries. Immersed in unfamiliar settings, residents encounter a spectrum of teaching styles and cultural dynamics, broadening their perspectives on medical education. By navigating through varied learning environments, they gain invaluable insights into alternative approaches to patient care and medical practice. Moreover, this experience cultivates adaptability and resilience as residents navigate through different healthcare systems and institutional structures. Ultimately, the external rotation serves as a catalyst for personal and professional growth, equipping residents with a versatile skill set and a global perspective essential for their journey as future healthcare leaders.

Elective Rotation

Within the medicine program, each resident is allocated six months for elective rotations, allowing them to tailor their learning experience to suit their interests and future career aspirations in specific specialties. This personalized approach empowers residents to deepen their understanding and proficiency in their chosen subspecialties, thereby elevating the quality of patient care they provide. By immersing themselves in focused areas of study, residents not only enhance their skills and knowledge but also refine their competencies within their desired specialties. Consequently, this intensive focus on subspecialties equips residents with a competitive edge for fellow training opportunities, positioning them as adept and sought-after candidates in their respective fields.

Scholarly activities

Besides applying evidence-based medicine in their clinical training, internal medicine residents have abundant opportunities to participate in scholarly activities. These include enrolling in a research methodology course, attending monthly journal clubs, presenting at national or international medical conferences, and contributing to clinical publications.

Teaching services

Medicine residents are actively involved in the education and mentorship of medical students and interns within their teams. They take on leadership roles in conducting teaching conferences and leading rounds for both medical students and interns. Equipped with training in clinical teaching skills, residents adeptly apply their knowledge in these educational settings. Regular feedback from faculty further refines their teaching abilities, ensuring continuous improvement. This experience not only prepares residents for future faculty positions but also instills in them the confidence and expertise to effectively share their knowledge with colleagues, peers, and juniors.
