Vingroup has just announced “the Science and Technology Scholarship Program for Overseas Study for Master’s and Doctoral Degrees” for talented Vietnamese. The Program will be implemented for a duration of 11 years (from 2019 to 2030), awarding 1,100 fully funded scholarships to Vietnamese to study in countries with leading science and technology, such as the United States of America, Russia, France, Australia, Israel, Japan, South Korea and Singapore.
“The Science and Technology Scholarship Program for Overseas Study for Master’s and Doctoral Degrees” (the Program) is a component of the Science and Technology Resources Development Project of Vingroup.
The mission of the Program is to find talented Vietnamese to mentor and develop them further and provide them with rewarding opportunities so that they have the ability to lead and advance science and technology in Vietnam in the future. From 2019 to 2030, the Program will provide up to 100 fully funded scholarships per annum to Vietnamese to pursue master’s and doctoral degree programs. The scholarship recipients will study in the prioritized fields at excellent universities in different countries with leading science and technology in the world.
“There is a great demand of high-quality human resources in science and technology in Vietnam.”
Around 20 fields of study are given priority and include the following: artificial intelligence (AI), big data, machine learning, cloud computing, information security, cryptology, control and automation engineering, renewable energy, product design, robotics, mechatronics engineering, cell biology, and genetics, etc…
The Program has also identified a list of 50 target universities to send the scholarship recipients to pursue their graduate degree programs, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cornell University, and the University of Pennsylvania – the United States; the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) – Singapore; Australian National University (ANU) — Australia; the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) – South Korea; the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology — Israel; the University of Tokyo — Japan; Lomonosov Moscow State University — Russia; and the University of Limoges – France.
As part of the Program, Vingroup will cover 100% of the expenses incurred during the master’s and/or doctoral programs, including tuition fees, living stipends, round trip airfare and insurance. In addition, the awardees will receive a one-time grant to cover settling-in allowances and professional development during the program as well as reintegration support after they have completed their degree programs and have returned to Vietnam.
The Scholarship Program is open to all Vietnamese applicants who are working or studying either in Vietnam or overseas. The Scholarship applicants are those who are patriotic, talented, resilient, and passionate about contributing to the development of science and technology in Vietnam. Applicants must not be over 30 years of age at the time they start their master’s degree program and under 35 for the doctoral level.
The scholarship application and selection process is open, competitive, transparent, and free. The Selection Committee is comprised of leading professors with strong expertise in the target fields, including members of the Science Advisory Council of Vingroup, such as Professor Duong Nguyen Vu (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), Professor Vu Ha Van (Yale University, USA), Professor Tran Duy Trac (Johns Hopkins University, USA), Professor Nguyen Thuc Quyen (University of California, Santa Barbara, USA), Professor Do Ngoc Minh (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign – USA), and Professor Phan Duong Hieu (University of Limoges, France), together with other prestigious Vietnamese and international professors.
“There is a great demand of high-quality human resources in science and technology in Vietnam.”
Importantly, the Program will provide constant support to the scholarship recipients throughout the course of study and research. The Program will regularly update the scholarship recipients with information on employment, internship, and research opportunities or research projects in Vietnam. The objective of the Program is that upon their return to Vietnam, 100% of the graduates can quickly reintegrate and have good jobs with attractive remuneration packages so that they can fully optimize their talents and capabilities and, thus, they can lead and enhance the development of science and technology in Vietnam.
Professor Rohit Verma, Dean of External Relations for the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University (USA) and Member of the Protem Committee of the VinUniversity Project, confirmed: “Cornell University is so impressed with the strategy to develop the science and technology of Vingroup by investing in high-quality human resources development for Vietnam. Our experience has proven that it is important to have a good match between excellent students and leading professors to nurture talents. As an Ivy League University with a long history and large networks, Cornell is willing to provide support in connecting Vietnamese talents with reputable professors at the most leading universities”.
Ms. Le Mai Lan, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup and Executive Director of the VinUniversity Project, said: “The prioritized fields of study that have been selected for the Scholarship Program all belong to the key areas that can make a breakthrough for the science and technology development of Vietnam as well as of Vingroup. In Vietnam, there is a great demand of high-quality human resources in these areas. The Program pays particular attention to providing employment opportunities and to offering a deserving remuneration mechanism so that these talented professionals can have the best possible conditions to optimize their capabilities. We strongly believe that the Program will contribute to creating generations of high-quality Vietnamese talents, positioning Vietnam better in the world’s technology map and heading towards global competition.”
